The Dr. Adawia Alousi STEM Scholarship Fund for Muslim Women provides financial assistance to American Muslim women pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States. Launched at CAAP in 2016 with a $500,000 endowment, the Fund has awarded 174 scholarships totaling $480,000 over nine years. Learn about our Alousi Scholars by clicking the years below. 2025 2024 2023 2022 2021 2020 2019 2018 2017 About the Fund The Alousi Fund is the first and only one of its kind, and honors the incredible legacy of pioneering research scientist Dr. Adawia Alousi. It is the wish of the Adawia Alousi Trust that the Dr. Adawia Alousi STEM Scholarship Fund for Muslim Women at the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) will carry on the accomplishments of this remarkable woman. In a time when self-appointed experts attempt to define the face of the modern Muslim woman, Dr. Alousi’s life reminds us it is only Muslim women who can speak about their lives, careers and choices with true authority. The Fund supports American Muslim women to obtain education within STEM fields – placing highest priority on immigrants and refugees. Dr. Alousi would be honored to welcome you into the sisterhood of scientists (and other STEM careers). Our hope is that beneficiaries of the Fund – Adawia Alousi Scholars – will rise to the top, epitomize excellence in their respective fields, and carry Dr. Alousi’s spirit of generosity forward. About Dr. Adawia Alousi Dr. Adawia Amina Alousi was born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1931 into a tight-knit family who valued education. She was the youngest girl in a family of seven children–3 sisters and 3 brothers. Her father Amin Alousi was a hydraulic engineer and insisted each of his children receive a college education. Prior to his death he left explicit instructions to his oldest son, Adawia’s brother Majid (pictured right), that he ensure each of his youngest siblings attend and graduate from college before marrying; a request which was honored. Adawia gravitated toward science and graduated from University of Baghdad with a degree in pharmacology. Dr. Adawia Alousi with brother Majid In 1958, Adawia’s brother Majid (a physician attending Harvard School of Public Health on scholarship) supported Adawia to come to the US for advanced studies. She graduated with a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan in 1959 and subsequently went on to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the State University of New York. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship from Harvard Medical School in 1965, Dr. Alousi went on to lead a life of discovery and development in pharmacology. Her research was well-regarded which is reflected in the body of papers in esteemed medical journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and American Journal of Physiology . Dr. Alousi’s most rewarding work was as lead scientist and Institute Fellow of Cardiovascular Pharmacology at Sterling-Winthrop Research Institu

CAAP Fundholder Dr. Mohammad Othman with his mother and father The Othman Family Scholarship Fund at the Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) is in honor and a tribute to the remarkable life of Fatimah Lutfi Othman, who passed away on November 28th, 2001. Donations to this fund will support scholarship support for college-bound students at Riverside Academy in Dearborn, Michigan. Give to this fund Fatimah’s Life and Legacy Born in the town of Abu Dis, Palestine in 1927, Fatimah’s journey was one of resilience. Despite facing the challenges of living under occupation, she raised her six children, instilling in them the values of perseverance and the belief in the power of education. Among her children was Dr. Mohammad Othman, the fundholder of this scholarship fund. Dr. Othman recalls his mother’s insistence to dream big. Fatimah, though never given the opportunity to receive a formal education herself, was a huge advocate and supporter in her children’s pursuit for one. The value of persistence was certainly put to the test throughout Dr. Othman’s upbringing. The Six-Day War erupted during his formative years, yet with his mother’s encouragement and support, he went to Jordan for his high school education and later pursued his undergraduate and master studies in biology at the University of Jordan. Returning to Palestine, Dr. Othman taught at Al-Najah University in Nablus, before he got accepted to the University of Michigan in the United States, where he earned his Ph.D. at the School of Public Health. Inspired by his mother’s spirit of giving back, Dr. Othman has also served Riverside Academy board as treasurer for over 18 years. Fatimah was a pillar of her community, known for her open-door policy in Palestine, welcoming any guests into her home and showering them with her hospitality. Mission of this Fund The Othamn Family Scholarship Fund is a testament to the legacy of a remarkable woman whose love, resilience and belief in the power of education continue to inspire generations. A donation to this fund allows her legacy to live on by supporting scholarships for graduating seniors at Riverside Academy in Dearborn, Michigan. About the Fund The Dr. Samir Tuma Endowed Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to support students pursuing careers in medicine, uplifting the next generation of physicians to achieve their dreams and make contributions to the medical field. Donate to this fund Dr. Samir Tuma’s Story This fund was established by Dr. Samir Tuma , an internationally recognized physician, researcher and philanthropist. Dr. Tuma is a trailblazer in the field of nephrology, dedicating his life to advancing kidney care. Born and raised in Akka, Palestine, Dr. Tuma excelled in school, displaying the unique qualities of a future physician from a young age. He attributes his success to a scholarship he received as a student, which allowed him to continue his education. That financial support planted the seed of his commitment: if he ever had the means to support students, he would. Accomplishments in Medicine After receiving his medical degree from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dr. Samir Tuma obtained a nephrology professorship at the University of Haifa. His work earned him a prestigious researcher award in 1974, which led to an invitation to an international congress of nephrology in Italy. There, he connected with leaders in the nephrology field, opening doors to opportunities in Los Angeles and, eventually, Houston, where he settled with his wife Grace. Over his career, he held critical roles at and contributed to institutions such as Park Plaza Hospital (where he served as the Academic Chief of Nephrology and the Chairman of the Board for Institutional Review), Hermann Methodist Hospital, United Memorial Medical Care-Houston, Baylor University, the University of Texas and the Association of Healthcare Management. At the time of his retirement in 2017 after over 50 years in the field, DaVita Kidney Care, where Dr. Tuma had served as the Medical Director, honored his contributions in the field by naming a competitive national award after him—the Tuma Innovation Prize in Nephrology, providing medals of honor and grants to young physicians exploring innovative solutions in nephrology. In 2024, Houston Methodist Hospital recognized his impact by naming the academic chair in nephrology after him, establishing an endowed fund to support future academic and clinical research in the field. Commitment to Giving Back Dr. Samir Tuma founded the Houston chapter of the Arab American Medical Association (AAMA) in 1979 and co-founded the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) to bring Arab American physicians and medical students together with a shared mission of mentorship, professional development, and community service. He is the co-founder of the prestigious The Ben Qurrah Award for Excellence in Medicine, which is granted biannually to the best Arab physician in the world. Having faced challenges securing housing while he was a young medical student in Jerusalem, Dr. Tuma collaborated with Rice University to build student dormitories to provide housing for e
