The Arab American community is diverse, often misunderstood, underrepresented and understudied. With this in mind, the late Dr. Philip Kayal, formerly the chairman emeritus of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Seton Hall University, approached CAAP with his idea to support Arab American research. The Dr. Philip M. Kayal Fund for Arab American Research was established, fulfilling Dr. Kayal’s desire to support young Arab American scholars and social science research on the Arab American community. There is an enormous need for factual information on Arab Americans, and as an academic of Syrian ancestry, I wanted to help fill the void. I set up a research fund with the gracious help and support of CAAP, which made both the grant application and distribution process seamless. I never expected to be so pleased with the results. – Dr. Philip M. Kayal In its first year, the Fund provided grant awards to six scholars across the country, with research topics ranging from stereotyping of Arab American adolescents to Palestinian cinema, to Yemeni farm workers and more. 2015 Grant awardee Claudia Youakim at the University of Florida, who is researching Arab American identity constructs among college students, says “I am honored to be a grant recipient of the Dr. Philip M. Kayal Fund for Arab American Research! I am excited to share my research on Arab American ethnic identity with others at upcoming conferences, and the opportunity to collaborate with fellow scholars.” To date, the Kayal Fund has now awarded more than $44,000 to 36 Arab American researchers across the country. By supporting effective research through the Kayal Fund, you will strengthen programs serving the community, educate Americans about the contributions of the Arab American community to this country. Enable Arab Americans to have a stronger voice to shape their future within American society – give to the Kayal Fund! The objective of the grant is to promote mutual understanding between the Netherlands and the Arab World. Application requirements Since September, my journey has led me to the heart of Jordan, where I’ve been immersed in a training program focused on social work with migrants and refugees. Beyond the academic rigors, Jordan has offered me a wealth of cultural and natural wonders to explore. From the ancient marvels of Petra to the bustling souks of Amman, every corner of this country has something unique to offer. Besides delving into the complexities of humanitarian aid and its positioning in Jordan, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in Jordan’s rich cultural tapestry. From wandering the ancient city of Petra to navigating the vibrant streets of Amman’s souks, I’ve been enchanted by the sights, sounds, and flavors of this country. Even interactions with taxi drivers have become cultural lessons, with hand gestures simplifying the process of ordering a typical Jordanian coffee. – Eline Koopman, Travel scholar 2024 Read Our Alumni Stories Contact Correspondence Address: Lutfia Rabbani Foundation P.O. The Taha Family Scholarship Fund The Taha Family Scholarship Fund supports undergraduate and graduate students who aspire to build careers that create positive change in their communities, with a focus on supporting students in Illinois. The scholarship is intended for students pursuing fields related to nonprofit leadership, nonprofit management, behavioral sciences or related fields. By investing in future nonprofit professionals, the fund seeks to cultivate the next generation of leaders dedicated to serving others. It is anticipated that scholarship awards will range from $2,500 – $5,000 per student. About This Fund The Taha Family Scholarship Fund was established by Nareman Taha, a community leader whose advocacy and service have strengthened Chicagoland communities for decades. Read More Raised in Chicago and New York City in a Palestinian household that instilled in her the values of education and community, Nareman Taha dedicated her career to organizing, advocacy, and community service. In 2001, she co-founded Arab American Family Services (AAFS) alongside Itedal Shalabi and helped grow the organization into a trusted community institution serving thousands of individuals and families throughout the Chicagoland area. Through culturally responsive programs and services, AAFS has strengthened families, supported community well-being, and expanded access to opportunity for communities in the region. Inspired by her parent’s belief in the power of education, Nareman established this scholarship to support the next generation of nonprofit leaders, especially Arab Americans, committed to serving their communities.
